動画のタイトルは、
'plurals'
「複数」
です。
plural /ˈplʊərəl/ は、「複数形」のことです。
英語には単数形と複数形があり、数えられる場合は、
（単数）
a dog
one dog
（複数）
two dogs
three dogs
となります。
'dogs' /dɒɡz/ のように、単語に 's' を付ければ良い regular /ˈreɡjʊlə/ 「規則的」な名詞が大半ですが、irregular' /ɪˈreɡjʊlə/ 「不規則」な名詞もあります。
また、複数のような単語の形だけれども、「単数」というのもあります。
それらをこの動画で Shepherd さんが紹介しています。
1) 不規則の名詞複数形
▸ 'm' 「男」
man /mæn/ （単数）
men /men/ （複数）
▸ 'w' 「女」
woman /ˈwʊmən/ （単数）
women /ˈwɪmɪn/ （複数）
▸ 'c' 「子供」
child /tʃaɪld/ （単数）
children /ˈtʃɪldrən/ （複数）
▸ 't' 「歯」
tooth /tuːθ/ （単数）
teeth /tiːθ/ （複数）
▸ 'f' 「足」（くるぶしから下の部分）
foot /fʊt/ （単数）
feet /fiːt/ （複数）
▸ 'm' 「ネズミ」
mouse /maʊs/ （単数）
mice /maɪs/ （複数）
2) They look like plural, but they're not.
「複数形に見えますが、そうでなはい」
【単数で数えられない】
▸ news /njuːz/ 「ニュース」
The news is good.
「そのニュースは良いです」
× The news
単数 'singular' として数える場合は、
A news item. 「１つのニュース項目」
A (news) story. 「１つのストーリー」
* a news、 two news とは数えられない。
▸ -ics
mathematics /ˌmæθəˈmætɪks/ 「数学」
(一般には math /mæθ/ （米）, maths /mæθs/ （英）と言います)
economics /ˌekəˈnɒmɪks/ 「経済学」
athletics /æθˈletɪks/ 「陸上競技」
politics /ˈpɒlətɪks/ 「政治」
Politics is the art of the impossible.
「政治は不可能の芸術です」
× Politics
▸ illnesses /ˈɪlnəsɪz/, diseases /dɪˈziːzɪz/ 「病気」
measles /ˈmiːzlz/ 「はしか」
mumps /mʌmps/ 「おたふく風邪」
Measles is sometimes fatal.
「はしかは時折命取りになります」
× Measles
fatal /ˈfeɪtl/ 「致命的な、命取りになる」
▸ Games 「ゲーム」
billiards /ˈbɪliədz/ 「ビリヤード」
dominoes /ˈdɒmɪnəʊz/ 「ドミノ」
darts /dɑːts/ 「ダーツ」
Darts is popular in pubs.
「ダーツはパブで人気があります」
× Darts
3) The words look singular ... but ... they aren't.
「単語は単数に見えますが、そうではない」
【複数で数えられない】
▸ police /pəˈliːs/ 「警察官、警察隊」（複数）
The police control the highways. （複数）
「警察は高速道路を規制しています」
× The police
数える場合は、
A policeman is standing there （単数）
「一人の警察官があそこに立っています」
2 policewomen are ... （複数）
「二人の婦人警官が... 」
* a police, two police とは数えられない。
The Police Force /ðə pəˈliːs ˌfɔːs/ 「警察、警察部隊」は単数です。
a London Police Force 「ロンドン警察」
the Scottish Police Force 「スコットランド警察」
French Police Force「ランス警察」
といくつも police force があるので、
複数形だと、The Police Forces /ðə pəˈliːs ˌfɔːsɪz/ と 's' が付きます。
【複数で数えられる】
▸ People /ˈpiːpl/ （複数）
The people were waiting.
「人々は待っていました」
'people' の単数形は、'person' /ˈpɜːsn/
One person at a time, please.
「一人ずつお願いします」
性別を入れていないので、formal な表現です。
... crimes committed by person or persons unknown.
「知らない人による犯行」
この文は、とても formal で、 'frozen language' /ˈfrəʊzn ˌlæŋɡwɪdʒ/ 「凍った言葉」です。
これは、'legal documents and notices' 「法律の書類や通知」に使われます。
4) エクササイズです。
'was' か 'were' を選んで下さい。
1. The children ----- playing in the park, and a woman ----- looking after them.
2. There ----- several sheep in the field, but one sheep ----- on the road.
3. The people ----- standing in a queue, and a person ----- opening the door.
4. There ----- many species on the island, but there ----- one species that interested him.
5. The police ----- investigating the crime; in fact the entire police force ----- involved.
5) まとめ
▸ 単数、複数（不規則名詞）
one man, one woman, one child
two men, two women, two children
one tooth, one foot, one mouse
two teeth, two feet, two mice
▸ singular and uncountable
「単数、数えられない」
The news is good.
Politics is a difficult art.
Measles is sometimes fatal.

▸ Plural and uncountable
「複数、数えられない」
The police control the traffic.
▸ Plural and countable
「複数、数えられる」
The people were waiting.
